Millfield are proud to have a school council and they meet regularly to discuss the school and generate ideas for how the school can be improved.
They also liaise with the Friends Of Millfield to help them allocate raised money to projects that will directly affect the children at the school.
Elections are held every year, with elected members serving a 2 year term of office. Potential candidates have to be nominated and then produce an election campaign. Voting takes place similar to that of a general election with eligible candidates’ names appearing on a voting slip.
We have good links with the local MP, and the School Council aim to visit the Houses of Parliament on a regular basis to see and learn how democracy and parliament work in practice.
Recently children have been working on several campaigns and aspects of the school. They meet with a dedicated teacher and have regular meetings with the head teacher. Recent projects have included:
- Improving the school grounds
- Outdoor play equipment for KS2 children
- Environmental and recycling projects
The school council has also worked in partnership with other school councils from schools within the Trust on joint learning days. This has included planning and leading the learning days.
2024 -2025 Achievements and chosen charities
The school council have chosen three charities to support during 2024 – 2025. These are a local charity, a national and international charities.
Local: Rainbows
National: NSPCC
International: Make A Wish.
Friday 22nd November saw the school councillors organise and run their first charity event – Pyjama Day for Rainbows. The school council raised a fantastic £441.26, which has gone to Rainbows. Rainbows cares for hundreds of families every year who have a baby, child or young person with a serious or terminal illness that means that their lives will be shorter than most.
Houses of parliament Visit: 6th December
On Friday 6th December, our school councillors went to London to visit the Houses of parliament.
They got to see both the House of Commons and the House of Lords debating topics as well as seeing the Great Hall and other areas of parliament. We saw how the speaker chose people to speak and how it operates on a daily basis.
After the tour, they took part in a workshop all about debating and democracy. The children really deepened their knowledge and understanding of democracy.
